Cumulus Networks™, the company bringing the power of Linux to networking, today announced that IXLeeds, a not-for-profit Internet Exchange Point (IXP) based in Leeds, UK, has selected the Cumulus Linux operating system for the company’s upgraded Internet Exchange Point. The successful deployment followed a three-way bid, with the company being selected over Extreme Networks and Juniper Networks.
IXLeeds (http://ixleeds.net/) was launched in September 2010 in order to allow public peering in the north of the United Kingdom. It aims to help its members — including companies such as Akamai — to increase their network resilience and reduce overall traffic backhaul costs towards London.
The company began evaluating new solutions in late 2013 when their existing Brocade BigIron RX-8 system, which was first installed when the project began, could no longer meet their requirements. After a review of the system, which uncovered a lack of support combined with a lack of automation tools and high levels of power consumption, the IXLeeds team decided to upgrade the Internet Exchange Point.
Cumulus Networks’ solution includes 1G Quanta and 10G Edge-Core Ethernet switches both of which are provided by R-Com (www.r-comconsulting.com) and Hammer plc (http://www.hammerplc.com). The no-compromise solution was a clear advantage as Cumulus Networks’ disaggregated model allowed for the optimal selection of hardware and software at a fraction of the cost compared to traditional networking options.
In addition, by selecting Cumulus Linux, the industry’s first fully-featured Linux operating system for networking hardware, the company can now run the latest Linux applications and automation tools, delivering new levels of agility, scalability and flexibility to the network.
