Artifex Acquires Smart OfficeTM Mobile Apps

Acquisition Expands Beyond Page Description Language Software and Embedded Printer Technologies Into Mobile Apps

SAN RAFAEL, CA--()--Artifex Software Inc. today announced the acquisition of the best-selling Smart Office mobile apps, which enable users to view, create, edit and share Microsoft Office files and other documents, from Picsel International.

By acquiring the Smart Office mobile apps, Artifex is expanding its product suite beyond page description language (PDF, PostScript, PCL, and XPS) software and into the fast-growing realm of productivity apps. Professionals use such apps on mobile devices to work on documents, presentations and spreadsheets. In 2013, Picsel reported more than seven million downloads of its Smart Office apps.

Artifex will re-brand the former Picsel products. Smart Office 2, Smart Office for Good and Smart Office Plus are now offered “by Artifex” on all leading mobile platforms, including iPhone and iPad, and on Android-powered tablets and smartphones. Smart Office by Artifex will be pre-loaded on certain mobile devices.

“We are very pleased to add Smart Office to our expanding set of technologies,” said Miles Jones, President of Artifex. “Along with our highly regarded Ghostscript® and MuPDF® technologies, OEMs of Smart Office now have a reliable technology partner that can provide technical support today, and a roadmap for improvements and new features tomorrow.”

Artifex earned its reputation as a pioneer in open source software for PDF, PostScript, XPS, and PCL under the GNU Public License (GPL). More than 100 companies license Artifex Page Description Language (PDL) Ghostscript and MuPDF software, including HP, IBM, Konica, Kyocera and Xerox.

Millions of users benefit from Artifex PDL technologies when previewing documents on PCs or printing-out high-quality images.
