Daily Dot Media Acquires The Kernel

Popular U.K. tabloid joins DDM to expand company’s international reach and immersive reporting

AUSTIN, Texas & LONDON--()--Daily Dot Media (DDM), publisher of The Daily Dot, is acquiring The Kernel, a top U.K. publication well known for its investigative journalism, for an undisclosed sum.

As its flagship publication continues to emerge as the must-read source for Internet news and social commentary, Daily Dot Media is excited to build its portfolio of brands and extend its global reach with The Kernel’s enterprising and provocative coverage of today’s Internet culture.

“Our vision,” CEO Nick White comments, “is to house the Internet’s most insightful coverage under one roof and infuse established standards of journalistic excellence with the format and distribution methods that resonate with our connected, progressive audience. The Kernel and The Daily Dot will produce hard-hitting news, features, and investigative reports from all corners of the brave new digital world. We’re excited about the future potential for The Kernel in the DDM family.”

Kernel founder and editor-in-chief Milo Yiannopoulos will continue in an advisory role while pursuing new projects. “I’ve watched and admired The Daily Dot since 2011,” said Yiannopoulos. “I love its focus on the human interest stories of the Internet and I think we’ve been on very similar missions these past few years. Sooner or later, a conversation about pooling resources was going to be inevitable. The combined power of The Kernel and The Daily Dot will be a journalistic force to be reckoned with."

Other company assets will be rolled into DDM operations and integration plans will continue to develop through the second quarter without interruption to The Kernel’s current format.

The move comes at a time of significant editorial expansion and innovation for The Daily Dot. To meet the demands of an ever-growing audience, the team recently welcomed two new editors—Molly McHugh (Digital Trends) and Sarah Weber (Sandusky Register)—and became the first publication of its kind to launch an eSports section, devoted solely to the world of competitive gaming. “We’ve become known for our unflinching coverage of modern Internet culture,” comments managing editor Austin Powell. “The Kernel shares our commitment to the relentless pursuit of truth in this space, and together we will continue to break and uncover stories whose ripple effects will be felt across the Web.”
