CH2M HILL and Fairhurst Investing in Future Engineers

GLASGOW, Scotland--()--CH2M HILL and Fairhurst are leading a Business Enterprise event on Thursday 16 January at Roch's Secondary School, Glasgow. The event is centred around a theoretical engineering problem which requires pupils to develop a transport scheme to access an imaginary island. To solve the problem students will need to draw on a variety of cross-curricular skills.

To develop and implement the scheme pupils must consider construction, environmental and operational costs as well as logistics for health and safety during construction. Assuming roles as project managers, architects and health and safety experts the pupils will pitch their preferred design solutions to CH2M HILL and Fairhurst engineers in a 'Dragon's Den' style competition.

As part of its commitment to community investment programmes, CH2M HILL is a business partner for St Roch's Secondary School and works alongside organisations such as John Lewis and Novotel Hotels to promote the involvement of schools in business and industry. Business partners help provide careers advice, support in applying for jobs as well as providing work experience and future career opportunities.

CH2M HILL and Fairhurst have been working closely with the school and Glasgow City Council's employability officers for six months to ensure the event is successful and provides real community benefits for the local students.

James Rowntree, Managing Director of Transportation, Europe at CH2M HILL, said: “CH2M HILL is committed to its community investment programme and is pleased to be working alongside Fairhurst, John Lewis and other industry bodies to deliver this important business enterprise event. This event is a fantastic opportunity to bring together skills and expertise from across a variety of industries to help provide practical experience for school children looking to pursue careers in engineering.

"Over the past 12 months CH2M HILL has increased its operations in Scotland and has been working on some of the country's most important transport projects. As a business partner of St Roch's Secondary School we are really pleased to be involved in this and contribute to what promises to be a highly successful event."

The Deputy Head of St Roch’s Secondary School, Frank Delury, said: “St Roch’s Secondary School is delighted to take part in the ‘Dragon’s Den’ Enterprise event. This is an exciting, fun way to learn about engineering, design and teamwork. Our pupils will be putting to good use all of the expertise they have learned in their various subjects at school and combining it all into one learning package. The pupils are looking forward to the event and the staff are keen to see the active learning on a large scale.”
