Software AG Sponsors the Future of Big Data at University of California, Berkeley

  • Twenty five students create cutting edge Big Data solutions over a 15 week course
  • Students now raising funds to expand their prototypes into successful products
  • Berkeley named as the top US campus for finding bright and ambitious graduates.

SAN FRANCISCO & RESTON, Va.--()--Software AG today announced that their sponsored IEOR190C Industry Challenge Big Data course at the University of California, Berkeley has come to a completion. The course introduced students to the latest Big Data technologies and worked with them to build innovative software solutions. Twenty-five students took part in the fifteen week course with the two wining projects now in the process of raising investment funds to turn the prototypes into successful products.

“The program is designed to activate students in an Experiential and Catalytic approach. The challenge provided a great focus for students to run through our tournament style class creating a truly unique experience that seemed to reward every student in the program. It created a huge impact. Exciting projects like this are why Berkeley is top for ambitious graduates,” said course instructor Stephen Pieraldi referring to a recent survey that names Berkeley as the top campus for finding bright and ambitious graduates.

Software AG, through its Terracotta subsidiary based in San Francisco, sponsored the Big Data course at UC Berkeley. Four initial teams, comprised of approximately 25 students, competed during this 15-week course to create cutting-edge solutions using Terracotta products. After 13 weeks of intense competition, two teams were selected to move to the finals to compete for the grand prize. Both teams had excellent ideas / prototypes based on Terracotta BigMemory and Apama CEP products that combined streaming data from multiple sources and enriched it with historical data-at-rest to produce insights.

“Software AG is committed to supporting innovation in Big Data,” said John Bates, Software AG CTO for Intelligent Business Operations and Big Data. “It is important to equip graduates with the skills to utilize the latest software technologies and to contribute to driving innovative startups that can have a big impact on the local economy. We wish great success to the two winning projects Sweetch and Ideal Space in entering the IT market.” Software AG also invested in another Bay Area company Datameer recently.

Sweetch is a social parking solution that makes finding a parking spot easier by ‘sweetching’ with the nearest driver for a small dollar amount. The solution uses streaming data that helps them understand the traffic conditions and the locations of Sweetch customers and drivers. The runner-up was Ideal Space that helps find the right location to open a business based on analysis of data from multiple sources like Yelp, FourSquare, US Census records, social media, etc. Both teams are in the process of raising funds to expand their prototypes into successful products.
