Shelter House and NOVACO Announce Merger

NOVACO and Shelter House Continue Services to Domestic Violence Survivors

FAIRFAX, Va.--()--Shelter House Inc., a nonprofit providing services to homeless families and victims of domestic violence, and Northern Virginia Coalition (NOVACO), a non-profit providing transitional housing for survivors of domestic abuse in Fairfax County, today announced that the two agencies will merge and combine their programs to strengthen services and promote a community coordinated response ensuring victim safety.

Established in 1999 to provide transitional housing, support and guidance to domestic abuse survivors, NOVACO services and programs will continue while operating as a program of Shelter House. NOVACO currently offers supportive housing and services, job training, counseling and financial literacy to enable families to reach self-sufficiency through community collaboration.

“The support of Shelter House, an outstanding organization with a proven track record of success helping the domestic violence community, will help NOVACO create added awareness for our programs, highlighting the continuing need for families left homeless due to domestic violence,” said Kim Roman Corle, NOVACO’s Interim Executive Director and Board Chair.

Shelter House has served homeless families since 1981 and operates Artemis House (Fairfax County’s Domestic Violence Shelter), Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter, and the Patrick Henry Family Shelter, providing supportive transitional housing, permanent supportive housing, and community case management programs.

“Shelter House is thrilled to have NOVACO join us in our work as we expand our reach to this deserving audience, changing lives in the community,” said Jewell Mikula, Executive Director, Shelter House, Inc.

In a joint statement, Mikula and Corle, said: “Domestic and intimate partner violence creates tension, fear and uncertainty for all family members. With over one million people in our county, domestic violence on the rise, and nonprofit funding reduced, the need for our support continues to grow.”
