Colorado Moves to New Website Platform for Government Agencies Across State

DENVER--()--The Colorado Statewide Internet Portal Authority (SIPA) and its partner, Colorado Interactive dba Colorado.gov, have offered up a new content management system (CMS) using Drupal. Drupal provides a modern, easy-to-use CMS that allows government partners across the State of Colorado to create content rich websites.

SIPA serves more than two hundred CMS sites for state and local government partners, and has seen tremendous growth in demand in the past three years. The growth in the service required a look at alternative platforms that would allow for more robust functionality, greater stability, and the ability to serve a growing number of users who access partner information via mobile devices.

John Conley, SIPA’s Executive Director, stated, “Perhaps the most important feature that will stay the same with the new CMS solution is the price. By moving to Drupal, SIPA is able to offer more of the advance features and functions that our customers have been asking for while decreasing the overhead for our developers and designers. This means that we will be able to roll out sites faster than ever before and in a more cost friendly manner for our operations. All of this equates to an important consideration for our customers which is that sites supported and maintained by SIPA and Colorado Interactive will continue to be free.”

Drupal offers features and functionality that outshines the current CMS being used by the State of Colorado. In addition, it offers state agencies a venue where they can place their information for public consumption at no cost to their organizations or constituents.

“The Drupal platform is especially effective for those state agencies that do not have the staff or resources to allocate to a lengthy website design effort,” said Colorado Interactive General Manager Fred Sargeson. “Our goal is for this technology to be accessible to every agency and local government across the state and this platform allows for that.”

Some advantages and features of Drupal are:

  • A single site theme that provides consistent branding across State Agencies and their Divisions.
  • Top-level navigation including user personas that personalize the user experience
  • Unique division-level home menus
  • Responsive design
  • Social integration
  • An easy-to-use web content management interface
  • Content that is easily shared among divisions and pages
  • The ability to publish content on-demand with no delays
  • iFrames that deliver easy department branding
  • The ability to create our own vanity URLs
  • The ability to create web forms
  • The time-saving ability to upload multiple files at one time

The Colorado Department of Personnel & Administration (DPA) launched its new Drupal website, www.colorado.gov/dpa, on October 17, 2013 which included nine mini-sites for each of the department’s divisions. The DPA website is the largest state agency to go live thus far. DPA was able to develop more than 600 pages of web content in less than one week.
