Statement by UANI’s Dr. Gary Samore & Ambassador Mark D. Wallace Regarding President Obama’s Telephone Call with President Rouhani

NEW YORK--()--United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) President, Dr. Gary Samore, and CEO, Ambassador Mark D. Wallace, made the following statement this evening regarding President Obama’s phone call today with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani:

Today’s telephone call between President Obama and President Rouhani is a historic event, but it remains to be seen whether it will amount to anything substantive. The real work lies ahead. There are still major obstacles to reaching a deal, and it is still unclear whether President Rouhani has the willingness or authority to make compromises.

The good news is that we will know soon—if Iran lets the coming months go by without agreeing to 1-on-1 deliberations with the U.S., or altering its nuclear position, it will be obvious that it is not prepared to take the steps necessary to address concerns about its nuclear program. In that case, additional pressure will be needed to change Iran's calculations and behavior.
