Securian's Swanson Named "Top Woman in Finance"

Remarkable career starts in typing pool and rises to full vice presidency

ST. PAUL, Minn.--()--From her first day at Securian in the 1970s, Nancy Swanson’s professional credo was, “Get to work early, stay late, and say no to nothing in between.” Strict adherence to this standard from her first day as a 19-year-old typist in the steno pool led to a vice presidency and the critical role of chief corporate compliance officer.

Swanson’s record of success in the financial services industry led to her be the sixth of six Securian nominees to be named to the Finance & Commerce list of Top Women in Finance.

“In this industry nothing is more important than compliance,” said Bob Senkler, chairman and CEO of Securian Financial Group. “Nancy understands that compliance is more than simply following the letter of the law. Of course we do that. You go beyond that and set a high ethical standard that builds trust and confidence among your customers.”

Strong ethics are Securian’s hallmark and the company has always been scrupulous about enforcing industry laws and high ethical standards. Former General Counsel and Board Secretary Dennis Prohofsky chose Swanson to unify the disparate elements of Securian’s compliance process and provide cohesive, organized leadership.

“Her long tenure as assistant to former chairman and CEO Coleman Bloomfield gave her unique insight into the company, its businesses and management,” said Prohofsky. “To be an effective chief compliance officer you have to have credibility throughout the organization and she always had that.”

Swanson has supervised and mentored many at Securian. Her views on leading those under her management are uncomplicated but profound.

“I try to understand what they’re experiencing and what they need to learn,” she said. “Then I help them discover the opportunities available at Securian. Many of us have enjoyed stimulating, diverse careers here and that’s what we want for all of our good people.”

Swanson will be recognized at a banquet November 21 at the Hyatt Regency in Minneapolis.
