FBI Analysts Association Statement on Mr. James Comey's nomination

WASHINGTON--()--The FBI Intelligence Analysts Association (FBI IAA) – representing over 450 current FBI intelligence professionals – congratulates Mr. James Comey on his nomination by President Barack Obama to serve as FBI Director following the departure of Robert S. Mueller III. Though the Association does not endorse specific candidates, we deeply admire his moral courage, vigorous defense of the Constitution, and unqualified belief that "intelligence under law is the only sustainable intelligence in the country." Mr. Comey also demonstrated his unwavering dedication to protecting the American people during the implementation of the 2004 Intelligence Reform Act (IRTPA) in his previous role as Deputy Attorney General.

For these reasons, we believe Mr. Comey embodies the core values and high standards of both the FBI and its Intelligence Analysts. We are confident that his nomination represents a pragmatic, impartial, highly-qualified, and ideal choice by the President.

Presuming Mr. Comey is confirmed, he will inherit the custodianship of a century-old institution which has undergone a decade of paradigm shifts and major transformation. One central aspect of this change has been the critical role played by intelligence analysis to secure our country and protect both the safety and rights of our citizens. Significant challenges remain, including overcoming the cultural, structural, and human capital barriers that have prevented the FBI from truly becoming an intelligence-led agency along with its key criminal investigative and law enforcement roles.

The Association wishes Mr. Comey success during the confirmation process and stands ready to work closely and effectively with him, as well as provide whatever service or counsel we can as he assumes these important responsibilities.
