Beatty Bangle Strama P.C. Announces Leah Stewart and Barry Burgdorf as New Shareholders

Burgdorf, former Vice Chancellor and General Counsel of University of Texas System, joins Austin-based law firm; Stewart promoted to shareholder

AUSTIN, Texas--()--BBS is pleased to announce the addition of Leah Stewart and Barry Burgdorf as new shareholders in the firm. Since 2006, the Austin-based law firm has provided legal representation to business clients in a broad spectrum of practice areas including litigation, corporate transactions, public policy, government relations, health care, environmental regulation, higher education, and administrative law.

Leah Stewart joined BBS in 2011 with an emphasis on healthcare and regulatory law. During her time with BBS, her expertise and ability to connect with clients quickly made her a valued and vital part of the BBS team. She provides invaluable guidance to clients in federal and state healthcare regulation, managed care contracting, legislative and rulemaking initiatives, healthcare transactions, as well as licensure and certification matters. Prior to joining BBS, Stewart practiced for eight years at Vinson & Elkins after receiving her J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law. Stewart has been named a Super Lawyers “Texas Rising Star” by Texas Monthly in 2012 and 2013.

“Leah is a problem solver. She brings both intellect and a practical understanding of the healthcare industry to the table,” says founding shareholder Matthew R. Beatty. “She gets the job done and motivates those around her. We are privileged to have her as part of the ownership structure at BBS.”

“BBS gives its lawyers flexibility to meet the needs of a very diverse client base. I’m very honored to be part of this growing group of talented lawyers,” says Stewart.

Barry Burgdorf brings an unparalleled depth of legal and business expertise to BBS. Burgdorf’s eight plus years as General Counsel for the University of Texas System accentuates an impressive resume that includes thirteen years of private practice with Vinson & Elkins and two years as General Counsel of Samsung Austin Semiconductor. As the lead attorney for one of the largest educational systems in the country, Burgdorf oversaw a diverse range of domestic and international legal issues including public-private affiliations, institutional compliance, healthcare, real estate matters, information security, and technology transfers. His international experience includes representation of clients with interests in both the Middle East and Asia. He was also part of the System’s strategic management team by serving as one of the top strategic advisors to the Office of the Chancellor on business matters. During his tenure with UT, he established the Horizon Fund for investing in new technologies and startups. He also played a leadership role in the establishment of the new medical school campus in Austin. Among other numerous awards and honors, Burgdorf has twice been named a “Texas Super Lawyer” by Texas Monthly and is the recipient of the Magna Stella award from the Texas General Counsel Forum and the Outstanding In-House Counsel award from Nightingales’ Healthcare News.

“Barry brings a remarkable breadth of experience to BBS,” says Beatty. “You just don’t find lawyers with his combination of legal expertise and executive level strategic management experience. Our firm is thrilled to add him to our team and we know that all BBS clients will benefit from his presence at the firm,” he adds.

In explaining his decision to join BBS, Burgdorf says “I have worked with many law firms, big and small, and the level of client service that BBS provides is unmatched. The firm’s culture of flexibility and pragmatic problem solving is what assured me that this was the perfect career move.”

Burgdorf’s practice will focus on international and domestic technological business transactions, public-private affiliations, corporate governance, internal compliance, crisis management and technology.
