Sunrise Health Implements AppSense and Unidesk for 3,000 User Healthcare VDI Project

User Virtualization and Desktop Layering Technologies Enable Regional Health Authority to Meet Diverse User, Application, and Desktop Requirements

NEW YORK & MARLBOROUGH, Mass.--()--AppSense, the leader in people-centric computing, and Unidesk Corporation, the leader in virtual desktop management software, today announced that Sunrise Health is implementing AppSense user virtualization and Unidesk® desktop layering technologies as key components in its enterprise-wide Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) initiative. The VDI deployment at the Canadian regional health authority is one of the largest in North America, incorporating 3,000 desktops, hundreds of applications, numerous use cases, and a wide range of mobile and fixed devices.

“Compliance and meaningful use requirements, mounting IT service expectations, and a small IT staff that spends too much time managing desktops and applications led us down the path toward desktop virtualization,” said Sheranga Jayasinghe, Director of IT, Sunrise Health Region. “VDI needed to be flexible to meet our diverse user, application, and desktop requirements, yet simple to implement and manage so we could spend more of our time on projects that move the quality of our health care forward. After evaluating many solutions, we selected AppSense and Unidesk to provide the user virtualization and VDI management capabilities vital to the success of our project.”

Unidesk desktops with AppSense software are being hosted on HP servers virtualized with VMware vSphere®. The desktops are accessed by Citrix XenDesktop® through Apple iPads, Android devices, Dell Wyse zero clients and existing PCs. By using AppSense for policy management, user rights management and mobile data access, Unidesk for desktop provisioning, image management and application delivery, and AppSense and Unidesk together for personalization, Sunrise Health is increasing access to key healthcare applications and enabling its mobile workforce to work the way they want, while improving IT governance, control, and efficiency.

“By leveraging AppSense technology, Sunrise Health is able to control what data and settings are retained, what users have access to, how they access data and what they can do with it, all while giving IT staff the centralized control and user policies needed for compliance and standardization,” said Carl Cross, Senior Vice President of AppSense. “This helps to ensure that Sunrise Health employees will always receive a consistent, predictable and personalized working experience across all Microsoft Windows® desktops regardless of delivery method, without the need for cumbersome profiles or scripts.”

Previously it could take as long as three weeks to provision a new user. By implementing VDI with Citrix, AppSense and Unidesk, Sunrise Health has been able to reduce the time it takes to on-board a new user to less than half a day.

With AppSense user virtualization software, Sunrise Health no longer needs to manage profile migration, redo login scripts or configure GPOs. This has led to additional time savings, and is enabling the IT organization to get back to the business of improving healthcare rather than managing legacy systems.

With Unidesk, Sunrise Health is creating persistent and non-persistent desktops using 70-90% less VDI storage capacity than full-sized virtual desktops. The health authority’s many applications are being packaged in minutes as independent “layers” separate from the Windows operating system, without the cost, complexity, limitations, and interoperability challenges of application virtualization technology. Application layers can be assigned to one or more desktops, patched once to update all desktops, or removed with a few clicks. One gold image of Windows is being used for all desktops, making VDI operating system patches and updates fast and easy.

”As healthcare organizations are discovering, desktop layering is really the only way to create custom desktops and deliver different applications in VDI with minimal storage and minimal IT effort,” said Tom Rose, Unidesk Chief Marketing Officer. “We’re delighted that Sunrise Health is implementing Unidesk as its desktop layering platform, and we’re happy to be partnering with AppSense to make this project a three-way success for Sunrise Health IT staff, workers, and the families they serve.”

AppSense and Unidesk are collaborating to provide best-in-class user and VDI management capabilities for Citrix XenDesktop® and VMware Horizon View™ deployments, and recently announced a technical alliance to validate solution interoperability. Sunrise Health is one of the largest regional health authorities in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, with more than 3,000 employees serving the healthcare needs of 60,000 people.
