WASHINGTON--()--The global development and relief organization Save the Children has honored U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) this week with its Congressional Champion for Real and Lasting Change Award for 2013.

The award is bestowed on members of the U.S. Congress who show outstanding leadership, extraordinary commitment and vigorous support for helping children in need in the United States and around the world.

“Congressman Hoyer has been a partner of Save the Children in many ways, and has led initiatives that improve the lives of children,” said Save the Children President and CEO Carolyn Miles. “We are honored to recognize Congressman Hoyer’s outstanding leadership in safeguarding and promoting effective and efficient programs for the most vulnerable children and families in the United States, and urging robust funding for key early education, health and safety programs. His commitment to ending poverty is most commendable.”

For more than 30 years, Hoyer has demonstrated a profound commitment to supporting child-focused programs, including Head Start, the Child Care and Development Block Grant, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Additionally, in the wake of the tragedy in Newtown, Conn., he provided sound leadership on the need for the country to prioritize the safety of children.

“I am honored to receive the Congressional Champion for Real and Lasting Change Award from Save the Children, an organization leading the effort to improve and protect children’s lives around the world,” said Hoyer. “Children are our future, and I have been proud to support programs and funding critical to youth development and especially early childhood education. It is our responsibility to invest in our children’s health, education, well-being and safety, so that even the most vulnerable families and children have the opportunity to thrive. I will continue to work in Congress to ensure that all children have the resources and support they need to lead healthy, full and prosperous lives.”

Hoyer was presented the award Wednesday during Save the Children’s Advocacy Summit, an annual event on Capitol Hill that mobilizes individuals of all ages from across the country who want to lend their voice on behalf of children in need in the U.S. and around the world. Other legislators receiving the Congressional Champion for Real and Lasting Change Award for 2013 include Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and U.S. Rep. James McGovern (D-MA).
