Dan Osterweil, M.D., Named Vice President and Medical Director of SCAN Health Plan

LONG BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SCAN Health Plan announced today the appointment of Dan Osterweil, M.D., as vice president and medical director, effective immediately. For the last decade Dr. Osterweil has worked as a consultant to SCAN and has played a vital role in many of the health plan’s case management program training, physician-education programs, practice innovations and other important initiatives.

Among his historical duties with SCAN, Dr. Osterweil has annually served as course chair of the Leadership and Management in Geriatrics Conference conducted by SCAN Health Geriatric Education Center. This nationally known conference helps fill the serious gap in the professional development of those who work in clinical and academic settings related to geriatric care.

Most recently Dr. Osterweil spoke on behalf of SCAN at the 2012 Annual Quality Symposium, co-sponsored by the California Association of Long Term Care Medicine, the California Association of Health Facilities and the Health Services Advisory Group. There, Dr. Osterweil told the audience of healthcare professionals that proven care paths and a team approach can help reduce the rate of hospital readmissions among residents of nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities.

Dr. Osterweil has served for nearly three decades as a professor of medicine at UCLA where he also did his geriatric medicine fellowship. He will continue his tenure as professor at UCLA providing a bridge between academic geriatrics and frontline implementation of practice innovations.

A member of the editorial board of Caring for the Ages, Dr. Osterweil has co-authored two editions of Medical Care in the Nursing Home, is the co-editor of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, and has published over 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is also the founder of the Specialized Ambulatory Geriatric Evaluation (S+AGE™) Clinic in Los Angeles and is the emeritus editor and founder of the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association.
