Research and Markets: Household Appliances (Brown Goods) Market Report 2013

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/bwccbs/household) has announced the addition of the "Household Appliances (Brown Goods) Market Report 2013" report to their offering.

“Household Appliances (Brown Goods) Market Report 2013”

This Key Note Market Update examines the household appliances (brown goods) industry in the UK. In 2011, the market declined for the first time in 5 years, falling in value by 0.3%.

Brown goods are defined as home entertainment appliances that were traditionally encased in wooden or wooden-like frames. The report divides the market into six principle categories. Televisions account for nearly half of all brown goods in the UK and comprise one of three sectors that increased in value in 2011. The portable audio equipment sector grew more than any other sector; this is because, although Britons spend more and more time on-the-go, they still want to be entertained by their music and other audio programmes. However, growth in the sector slowed due to heavy promotional activity. Promotions are evident across the market as manufacturers compete among themselves and against cheap imports and mobile devices. Key Note attributes the bulk of growth in digital, cable and satellite receiving equipment to the Digital Switchover (DSO). However, the initiative was completed in October 2012, meaning that future sales are likely to slow.

The brown goods market is continually evolving due to technological developments. As a result, with time, appliances become obsolete and are replaced by more modern and superior devices. This helps to explain why other sectors in the brown goods market are in decline. Appliances such as video-cassette recorders (VCRs), cassette-tape players and camcorders are losing relevance in today's society. This phenomenon is affecting both value and volume sales in the overall industry and hindering demand. Moreover, although consumers in the UK enjoy having the latest gadgets and devices, the economic crisis is forcing them to cut back on their spending. As a result, brown goods are being overshadowed by mobile devices. Smartphones, tablets and laptops are more versatile than home entertainment appliances. They can be used at home and on the go, and have more functions. Thus, Britons are increasingly opting to purchase these devices instead of brown goods.

Key Note expects that the brown goods industry will continue to decline in future. In spite of the rise in the number of households in the UK, this will not mean that brown goods fly off retail shelves. Although watching television and listening to music and other programmes will remain a popular activity among Britons, they will increasingly rely on mobile devices instead of brown goods. Still, the market will continue to evolve. This will include the introduction of 3D televisions and appliances with streaming capacities. However, manufacturers will struggle. As a result, they will turn their focus on other electronic goods and different markets. Between 2012 and 2016, the brown goods market in the UK is expected to fall in value by 5.1%.
