MILWAUKEE--()--The Ab Nicholas Scholarship Foundation will offer up to 250 scholarships based on need, academic achievement and character to Wisconsin public high school graduates who plan to attend University of Wisconsin System schools.

Students who participate in a boys or girls high school basketball program their senior year are eligible. The annual scholarships--$10,000 for four-year programs and $5,000 for two-year programs—are renewable for the length of the program.

Albert Nicholas, founder and chairman of the Nicholas Company, Inc., a Milwaukee-based investment advisory firm that manages the Nicholas mutual funds, established the scholarship foundation in 2012 with a $50 million endowment.

“Our goal is to make higher education accessible and affordable to worthy students, helping them open doors to a better world,” Nicholas said.

Nicholas received an athletic scholarship to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and, later, an MBA in finance and investments. As a guard on the UW-Madison basketball team, he was twice named to the All-Big 10 team and once to Look Magazine’s All-American team. Nicholas was the highest scoring guard in UW history when he graduated and was inducted into Wisconsin’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.

“There’s no doubt my UW education made a difference for me, on and off the court,” Nicholas said. “The foundation’s objective is to give Wisconsin student athletes that same kind of opportunity.”

Students can apply for this year’s scholarships Feb. 1 through April 30. To apply or learn more about the Ab Nicholas Scholarship Foundation, visit www.AbNicholasScholars.org.
