DC Major-Metro Construction Activity Increased 14.5% in Year-Over-Year Analysis, BidClerk Data Finds

Private Construction Increased 26.9% and Public Construction Increased 5.9% Compared to the Same Period Last Year

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--For Washington DC major-metro regions, including Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV and Baltimore-Towson, MD, the 4^th quarter 2012 BidClerk Construction Index™ (BCI) reported a year-over-year increase in construction projects that were actively bidding for both private and public construction projects. Total construction was up 14.5%, with private construction up 26.9% and public construction showing a smaller gain of 5.9%.

However, 4^th quarter 2012 data from BCI showed that quarter-over-quarter private construction activity was down (-7.7%) and public construction was down (-4.0%). Total quarter-over-quarter construction activity was down (-5.1%). This compares to a recent quarter-over-quarter BCI analysis for the 3^rd quarter of 2012 which showed that all Washington DC-region construction projects that were actively bidding decreased (-10.9%).

In a year-over-year analysis for the District of Columbia, construction projects that were actively bidding increased 16.8%, but a quarter-over-quarter analysis showed that overall construction activity was down (-6.5%).

In a year-over-year analysis for the Baltimore region, combined public and private construction projects that were actively bidding increased 9.9% compared to one year ago, but a quarter-over-quarter analysis by BCI revealed a (-2.0%) drop in activity. This compares with a BCI 3^rd quarter 2012 report which showed that quarter-over-quarter construction activity had decreased (-20.4%).
