Everbridge Broadcast by City of El Segundo Leads to Capture of Stabbing Suspect

At approximately 12:44pm on November 7^th, 2012, El Segundo police officers responded to a business located in the 100 block of Center Street regarding a stabbing that had been reported. The suspect involved in the alleged assault, also believed to be responsible for numerous other related crimes, fled the area on foot. While police officers were conducting a search for the suspect, the El Segundo Police department initiated a mass notification to the public utilizing the Everbridge system. Residents and business owners in the city were instantly advised of the crime through multiple contact paths and provided a description of the suspect.

Less than an hour later, a business employee in the 2200 block of E. Maple Avenue, who had received the Everbridge notification, observed a person matching the suspect’s description steal a jacket from his business and flee on foot toward Imperial Highway. The informed business employee called 911, reported what had taken place and the suspect was located quickly and taken into custody. This case demonstrates how timely critical public information can assist in maintaining a safe community and decrease the time and expense related to apprehending a criminal and potentially avert additional crimes.
