1) Collision Avoidance Systems
Collision avoidance
systems use sensors to detect and alert drivers to dangers in the road
with the use of caution lights or alarms, and in some cases, by reducing
speed or by providing braking assistance. The most effective are forward
collision warning systems that alert drivers to objects in the road
ahead.
2) Emergency Brake Assist
Emergency Brake Assist
takes over to provide maximum braking power for drivers during a sudden
stop. The system detects the vehicle’s speed and automatically applies
the brake with the greatest force required to stop the car in an
emergency braking situation.
3) Adaptive Headlights
Different from standard
headlights that shine straight ahead, adaptive headlights adjust around
corners to help drivers see better at night. Adaptive headlights detect
the vehicle’s steering and adjust accordingly, turning right when the
car turns right and left when the car turns left.
4) Pedestrian Airbags
The new Volvo V40, introduced
this year, features exterior airbags designed to help prevent
pedestrians from getting injured by a moving car. The car’s sensors can
detect a pedestrian’s legs at the front of the car and can immediately
deploy a U-shaped airbag near the windshield, slightly lifting the hood
and acting as a cushion during impact.
5) Adaptive Cruise Control
Similar to standard cruise
control, Adaptive Cruise Control maintains a car’s pre-set speed.
However, Adaptive Cruise Control uses sensors to adjust speed to ensure
a safe distance between your car and the vehicle in front of you. When
the road is clear, the system adjusts back to the speed at which you
originally set it.
