ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Twenty-two distinguished professors from universities around the United States will each receive a $25,000 one-time cash award from the Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman Award Trust for inspiring their former students to make a significant contribution to society. The awards ceremony will take place at The Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012 at 6:00 p.m.

The Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman Award Trust was founded in 2008 under the will of Gail McKnight Beckman in honor of her mother Dr. Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman. Dr. Beckman was an educator, a renowned author and a pioneer in the field of psychology. She was one of the first female psychology professors at Columbia University and later taught at the University of Pennsylvania.
“The Beckman Award is unique in that award recipients are honored for the special ways that they have motivated their students to make a lasting impact on the world. The award recognizes current or former teachers, professors or instructors who have inspired their former students to create an organization or establish a concept, procedure, or movement which has demonstrably conferred a benefit on the community at large,” said Melba Vasquez, Ph.D., ABPP, Beckman Award trust advisory committee member and past president, American Psychological Association.
Since its inception in 2008, the Beckman Trust has awarded $525,000 to 21 professors and/or faculty members. Awards are based on a nomination application process. Award recipients must be current or former teachers, professors or instructors at a college, university, junior college, community college or technical school in the United States. Preference is given to educators who teach or have taught in the fields of psychology, medicine or law.
The Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman Award Advisory Committee is comprised of Dr. Melba Vasquez of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Karen Tidmarsh of Bryn Mawr College, Dr. Geraldine Downey of Columbia University and Joyce Yamaato of Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. "The Beckman Award is significant because it celebrates transformational educators and their profound mentorship as evidenced by the accomplishments of their former students,” said Joyce Yamaato, vice president at Wells Fargo Private Bank.
