Groundbreaking Innovation: Tensorcom, a NantWorks Company, Announces World’s First Ultra Low Power, High Speed Multi-Gigabit Wireless Chip for Mobile Devices

First Ultra low power WiGig Radio, the Nantoid chip, demonstrates blazing and unprecedented speed of 2.5 gigabits per second at a transmit power of less than 100 milliwatts

LOS ANGELES--()--Tensorcom today announced successful and groundbreaking test results of its innovative Nantoid chip with wireless transmission of data at an unparalleled speed of 2.5 gigabits per second at a transmit power of less than 100 milliwatts. This establishes the Nantoid chip as the industry's lowest power WiGig/IEEE 802.11ad radio and the first in the industry to meet the power requirements for mobile phones and tablets. This transformational advancement will enhance access and ease of use for millions of consumers.

“These are cutting edge results that will transform how people across the world use mobile devices. It is truly a game-changer,” said Ismail Lakkis, CTO and co-founder of Tensorcom. Compared to current transmission rates and battery consumption, it takes over 30 minutes and 7 percent of battery life to download ten high definition movies totaling 60 GB on a mobile device using WiFi. By contrast, with the ultra low power Nantoid WiGig chip, this will take a mere 130 seconds and consume less than 0.2 percent of battery life.

“Imagine the possibilities for how people will use this new technology,” said Lakkis. “The applications will be as diverse as the people using it, but one thing will be the same for everyone: faster, better-working phones and tablets with real time capabilities to sync and go.”

With this innovative and proven advancement, Tensorcom has taken the lead in developing the first ultra-low power WiGig compliant SoC integrating radio, modem and MAC. Transmission and power tests showed a fully functional WIGIG/802.11ad compliant SoC with integrated antennas operating at 2.5 Gbps coded rate in a non line of sight environment, with radio power usage less than 100 milliwatts.

Fact: the Tensorcom Nantoid radio is fabricated in TSMC 40 nm standard CMOS process with the following groundbreaking features:

  • Peak RX power < 80 mW
  • Peak TX power < 100 mW with 17 dBm EIRP
  • Antennas fully integrated in the package
  • Low cost 9 mm x 7.5 mm package, less than 1.2 mm high.
  • A novel end-fire antenna pattern suitable for placement in thin devices
  • Patch antenna for vertical mounting.

“We look at innovation through the eyes of the consumers who use technology – striving to enhance their access and deliver daily, hassle free ease of use. We have successfully met the challenges of limited power, limited bandwidth, and limited form factor that are facing mobile devices today. Tensorcom is the first company to provide a proven, low power, low cost, small size 60 GHz solution, that meets the power and size constraints of mobile devices,” said Patrick Soon-Shiong, CEO of NantWorks and Chairman of Tensorcom.

“The Tensorcom solution is not only the lowest power solution, it also provides multiple embedded antenna configurations that support the low profile requirements of mobile devices,” said Hock Law, CEO of Tensorcom. “We have a strong focus on low power design, not only for the radio, but also for the modem and MAC. The result is more than just exciting innovations ... It’s useful, effective technology that benefits the lives of the people who use it.”

About Tensorcom

Tensorcom has announced availability of its Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig)/IEEE 802.11ad development kit which includes the industry's lowest power WiGig/IEEE 802.11ad radio and is the first to meet the power requirements for mobile phones and tablets. The TC-1T-12001-EV development kit showcases Tensorcom's industry leading 60 GHz radio design and provides an early look at the Tensorcom’s single chip WiGig/IEEE 802.11ad complete solution, which will be available for sampling in Q1 2013.

The TC-1T-12001-EV development kit is based on the latest WiGig specification and IEEE 802.11ad standard and supports up to 3.52 Gb/s operation over all four 60 GHz channels. The Tensorcom radio solution has been designed to be the lowest cost, lowest power solution for integrating multi-gigabit wireless links in space and power constrained devices such as mobile phones and tablets. Tensorcom, which received its first funding round in October, 2010, has quickly become the industry leader in low power, 60 GHz single chip solutions for multi-gigabit connectivity for mobile devices. Tensorcom's leading edge technology and design expertise enables a variety of applications for small form-factor, battery powered devices including high speed data synchronization, real time video streaming and high-speed wireless docking. Tensorcom solutions fully support the latest Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig) specification as well as the recently approved IEEE 802.11ad standard. Using the extensive industry experience of its design team, Tensorcom has jumped into the lead for low power, small form-factor, single-chip solutions with multiple options for integrated antenna.
