AT&T Leads First Technology Disaster Recovery Exercise in LA

Search Dogs, Hazmat Teams, COLT part of drill

LOS ANGELES--()--On the heels of the Big Shakeout drill today, AT&T is conducting its first Network Disaster Recovery Drill in Los Angeles. Recognizing the importance of reliable communication during and after a disaster, AT&T has invested $600 million in technology and equipment over 20 years for network recovery. The drill in downtown Los Angeles is being staged on Staples Center Parking Lot 7. It includes establishing emergency communications channels from the site – using equipment such as Emergency Communications Vehicles, satellite COLTs (Cell on Light Trucks), and microwave radio links and deploying search dogs and hazmat teams.

A total of 26 pieces of recovery equipment will fill most of the Staples Center parking lot – making a great aerial shot for helicopter flyovers. Equipment includes:

  • Technology Trailers (lots of bells and whistles)
  • COLT (Cell on Light Truck - a cell tower that can be moved anywhere via truck)
  • Emergency Communications Vehicle
  • Command trailer – a 53-foot trailer with pop-out sides for management team
  • Tool and Supply Trailer (a small hardware store)
  • Power Trailer and Power Distribution Trailer

Note: 83% of Los Angeles area businesses have a business continuity plan in place that will help them get back up and running as soon as possible in a disaster, according to a recent AT&T survey. Almost half (45%) of Los Angeles executives include Facebook in their business continuity plans, and six out of 10 (65%) are using or considering using cloud services to augment their business continuity recovery strategy.
