Smart Home Systems to Increase by 60 Per Cent between Now and 2017 Thanks to Machine-to-Machine Technology

The M2M Challenge is Looking for Innovative Solutions That Further Increase Security and Comfort in the Home

MUNICH--()--The intelligently controlled home is no longer a vision of the future, but instead it is modern reality. Outdoor lighting, climate control, power sources and even the alarm system will in future be largely controlled via machine-to-machine (M2M) solutions. According to a study by ABI Research on “Home Automation, Security and Monitoring”, technology in the intelligently networked house will increase by 60 per cent by the year 2017. As part of an international competition, the “M2M Challenge” is encouraging developers and entrepreneurs from all over the world to submit innovative M2M applications and thereby get involved in the fast-growing machine-to-machine market.

Energy efficiency and security are key elements in the establishment of smart home systems. The aim is to network buildings automation, smart metering, household appliance automation and entertainment electronics through direct radio connections. Fault messages can be relayed to a mobile phone when the home owner is away. For young technology aficionados as well as for our ageing society, there will be a raft of new solutions in the domain of the smart home that will make life more agreeable.

In a broad-based initiative by the main sponsors Swisscom and Ericsson, working in collaboration with m2mapps and sponsors Telit and VARTA Microbattery, the M2M Challenge will be launched for the first time in 2012. m2m apps community members can submit their innovative solutions in five different categories - Energy and Smart Grid, Health, Mobility, Security and Entertainment Electronics & more. An international committee of experts will assess the submissions based on criteria such as market potential, level of technological innovation and the innovative use of the Internet. Solutions can be submitted up to 31 December 2012 to www.m2m-challenge.com. The finalists and winners of the competition will be announced at an official awards ceremony which will be held at the start of 2013. The winner will receive US$ 5,000 in cash. All finalists will also have an opportunity to present their solutions to a wider audience which will include representatives of companies and the media.
