Total Traffic Network and Sigalert Increase Traffic Data Resources and Offer Incentives to Commuters During Carmageddon II in Los Angeles

SAN ANTONIO--()--Total Traffic Network, the leading provider of real-time traffic information to television, radio and in-vehicle navigation and mobile devices in the United States, is ramping up coverage to keep Los Angeles motorists informed of the impact of the upcoming Carmageddon II event.

During the weekend of September 28 a portion of the 405 freeway in Los Angeles through the Sepulveda Pass will be closed to motorists for 53 hours. This construction project, will involve the final demolition of the Mulholland Drive Bridge as part of a transportation improvement project. Billed as “Carmageddon II”, the 405 freeway will be closed in both directions for 10 miles between I-10 and the 101 freeway beginning at 7 p.m. on September 28.

In preparation for the event, Total Traffic Network is expanding coverage to its more than 55 radio and television affiliates in Los Angeles and is providing promotional discount offers for subscriptions to its Sigalert platform.

Sigalert provides real-time traffic information via the web and to mobile devices. Users of Sigalert can subscribe to personalized, route-specific traffic information sent to the mobile handsets. In preparation for Carmageddon II, new subscribers beginning September 20, 2012 will receive a 50 percent discount for personalized services for a limited time.

To ensure its audience and users have the highest quality information on the impact of the closure, Total Traffic Network is adding significant resources to keep Los Angeles motorists informed. During the event, Total Traffic Network will be adding aerial coverage from its airborne fleet during the weekend hours to monitor the entire region as it is expected that the closure of the 405 will have a wide impact on surrounding freeways and surface streets. In addition to airborne coverage, Total Traffic Network will also be increasing personnel at each of its Traffic Operations Centers in Sherman Oaks and Santa Ana to ensure the impact of the closure is monitored and reported.

“The first Carmageddon toppled one 60-foot column. This time they're taking down two columns, seriously reducing the chance of an early re-opening;” said Terry Edwards, Director of Operations for Total Traffic Los Angeles. “Regardless of what has gone before, the Sepulveda pass intersects two of the busiest freeway interchanges in the world (405/10 and 405/101) and the potential for wide-reaching impact is very real.”

While the Sigalert app remains a free download from the Apple store, the “My Sigalert” premium service allows users to create customized routes and received traffic alerts without any advertisements. To help make this premium service available to all drivers during this extreme event, new subscribers can use a special Carmageddon promotional code available on the news page Sigalert.com/news/Carmageddon to receive 50 percent off of a year subscription to the premium service. This limited time offer extends to all residents of the U.S. until 9/30/2012.
