MEA Benefits Trust, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine, Radio Disney Announce School Wellness Competition

S. PORTLAND, Maine--()--The MEA Benefits Trust, Radio Disney and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine announced today that the three organizations will team up to promote the importance of childhood health and wellness through the Get Active, Get Fit School Challenge. The challenge is open to students in kindergarten through sixth grade in public schools across Maine.

“We’re glad to be able to support this wonderful effort along with the MEA Benefits Trust and Radio Disney which shows young people that fitness can not only be a key part of your daily activity, it can also be fun.”

“The program is designed to motivate kids and families to achieve fitness together by engaging in fun and healthy activities,” said Christine Burke, executive director, MEA Benefits Trust. “Participants in the challenge should ‘get active and get fit’ for at least 20 minutes every day—or as often as possible. In order to successfully complete the challenge, students must be active for a minimum of 40 of the 55 days in the challenge, which runs from Oct. 1, 2012 through Nov. 24, 2012.”

Registration for the 2012 program is currently open and ends September 28. All schools that send in their results at the end of the Challenge will be entered into a drawing for the chance to win one of three gym equipment packages worth $500. The three schools with the highest participation will be awarded Radio Disney dance parties.

“Part of our daily mission is to encourage and support healthy behaviors for the communities we serve,” said Dan Corcoran, president and general manager, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine. “We’re glad to be able to support this wonderful effort along with the MEA Benefits Trust and Radio Disney which shows young people that fitness can not only be a key part of your daily activity, it can also be fun.”
