GE’s New Slate Finish Joins Stainless As Premium Appliance Option

As stainless steel plateaus near 35 percent* of all appliances sold, GE breaks ground with a new fashion-forward finish, Slate

Warm, grey metallic with a low-gloss finish, Slate is a natural complement to the wide spectrum of materials used in today’s modern kitchen designs

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--()--While stainless steel is still considered the premium finish for home appliances—accounting for 35 percent* of the kitchen appliances sold today—GE’s consumer research has found that a significant portion of homeowners are looking for something different. In response to the research, GE is launching a new finish called Slate across its GE® brand of appliances.

GE’s industrial designers spent countless hours conducting consumer research and reviewing design trends in the kitchen, home furnishings, home entertainment products, and automotive interiors and exteriors. The result was Slate—a warm, grey metallic with a low-gloss finish that is a natural complement to the wide spectrum of wall colors, countertop materials and floor and cabinetry finishes found in most homes today. Whether you are looking to replace a single appliance or remodeling your entire kitchen, GE’s Slate appliances were designed to make a statement by themselves or blend with other stainless steel, black or white appliances.

“As people transition their kitchen appliances over time, it was important to us to find a finish from a palette that is timeless and harmonious, yet distinctive,” said Lou Lenzi, director for GE Appliances’ Industrial Design Operation whose team of designers created the new finish. “Slate is a universal, neutral finish that will suit consumers who want a premium finish that can complement or even replace stainless steel.”

Inspired by the rich texture and appearance of stone, Slate has a deep, warm and inviting look that exudes refinement and sophistication. GE’s new Slate appliances are finished with bold, brushed metal touch points, such as handles and knobs – offering yet more contrast and interest.

“Individuality is very important to consumers who express themselves through the design of their kitchens,” said Brian McWaters, brand general manager for GE Appliances. “During our conversations with designers and consumers, they expressed their strong desire for an alternative to stainless steel. With the launch of Slate, we’re offering a new finish that has a warm, rich look and feel that tested very well in our research.”

In addition to the modern appearance, the matte finish on the exterior of the appliances is easy to clean and resists fingerprints. The new finish launches in September in a full suite of appliances comprised of two French Door refrigerator models, two free-standing gas range models, two free-standing electric range models, two built-in dishwasher models and an over-the-range microwave.
