Vector Resources to Begin Deployment of Energy-Saving GPON Networking Technology at City of San Diego New Central Library

Vector Resources Partners with Tellabs and TE Connectivity, GPON Technology Saves Energy, Reduces Costs and Increases Bandwidth

SAN DIEGO--()--Vector Resources, Inc., a leading systems integrator offering network consulting services and unified network solutions, announced today that it will soon begin its project to deploy passive optical local area network (LAN) architecture using GPON technology for providing high-speed bandwidth in the City of San Diego’s New Central Library. City officials awarded Vector this project earlier in the year, and issued a formal Notice to Proceed this month. The Project team has applied for Silver LEED certification, and the projected energy savings from optical LAN technology can contribute to this application.

In GPON architecture, fiber cable is “passively” split to connect multiple end users. Optical LANs do not require electrical power between the main equipment room and the end user area. This feature substantially reduces heat and decreases or avoids entirely the need for expensive air conditioning in server rooms or IDFs. It also has the potential to eliminate IDFs altogether. In addition, optical LAN equipment offers data connectivity up to gigabit speeds for all Library visitors.

“Turning to an optical LAN architecture offers many benefits for the Library. Reducing energy costs allows Library officials to possibly reassign funding for other activities and programs, contributes to an improved environment by reducing the need for additional telecom closets and potentially assists in the Silver LEED certification process,” said Debi Preece, General Manager of Vector Resources’ San Diego office. “At the same time, GPON may give Library visitors access to information much faster than they are accustomed to at most locations, including their homes.”

Vector Resources is collaborating with Tellabs and TE Connectivity to complete the project. Vector experts are contributing technical and systems integration expertise and experience with working in the San Diego public sector market. Vector’s knowledge of E-Rate, the Federal program that provides discounts to schools and libraries to secure affordable telecommunications and Internet access, allows the Library to maximize the benefits of the program. It is expected that the E-rate program will provide reimbursement for up to 80% of the cost of this optical LAN project. Tellabs offers a long, successful history in developing and deploying optical LAN technology electronics, and TE Connectivity, a global leader in copper and fiber optic connectivity, is supplying the cabling and connectivity expertise.

“The combination of Vector Resources, Tellabs and TE offers a solution that we believe best meets the needs of the patrons of the San Diego Public Library,” said Deborah Barrow, Director, San Diego Public Library. “The New Central Library is eager to do our part to save energy by upgrading to newer technologies, especially when these new technologies also provide improved access to information.”

“We have been working with PON technology for approximately 10 years, and believe it is a nearly future-proof solution for the Library,” said Charles Stone, Vice President of Government Systems at Tellabs. “It is an increasingly popular solution for architects and contractors attempting to secure LEED and related certifications as well as drive down long-term total cost of ownership (TCO).”

“TE Connectivity has extensive experience with connecting passive optical networks in the telecommunications, commercial enterprise, and federal enterprise environments. TE offers the library a robust and scalable cabling solution to meet their immediate and foreseeable future needs,” said Gary Eifert, Account Manager, TE Connectivity.
