Research and Markets: Oman Water Report Q2 2012: Water Distribution is Set to Increase From 43.535mn Gallons in 2012 to 49,962mn Gallons by 2016

DUBLIN--()--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/5wzqss/oman_water_report) has announced the addition of the "Oman Water Report Q2 2012" report to their offering.

Fresh tender activity on centrepiece desalination projects in early 2012 is an encouraging sign that the authorities are looking to ratchet up the pace of expansion. A tender is imminent for a new independent water project (IWP) at Al Ghubrah, which will add 42mn g/d of desalinated capacity in the sultanate. On an equally encouraging note, it is evident that some of the project slowdowns witnessed in 2011 may now be consigned to history. Seven groups were prequalified for Ghubrah in Q112 - among them Japan's Marubeni, Spain's Tecnicas Reunidas, and Singapore's Hyflux - and bidders have received requests for proposals from OPWP.

Key trends and recent developments in Oman's water sector include:

Oman's privatised water projects have proved attractive assets for investors. In January 2012, Bahrain-based fund manager Instrata Capital bought an undisclosed stake in the 68,000 cubic metres per day (m3/d) Salalah independent water and power project (IWPP) from Oman Investment Corporation, which developer Sembcorp is set to commission in April 2012. This will sit alongside Instrata's existing 8% stake in the Barka 1 IWPP.

Increased expenditure directed towards water projects in the state budget should help Oman to boost the number of households which have access to water in the main governorates. Water distribution is set to increase from 43.535mn gallons in 2012 to 49,962mn gallons by 2016, with Muscat accounting for more than half of that volume. Water connections are set to expand at an even faster pace. Muscat will raise the number of connected households from 193,000 in 2012 to 232,000 by 2016. The government has set aside OMR156.7mn for water works in the 2012 budget, as part of a wider allocation for various infrastructure sectors.
