Falls are no laughing matter:
National Safety Council promotes the prevention of slips, trips and falls this National Safety Month

ITASCA, Ill.--()--The National Safety Council on June 17 will launch its Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls week, sponsored by Grainger, as part of National Safety Month, an annual observance to educate and encourage safe behaviors around top causes of preventable injuries and deaths. Throughout the week, helpful information and materials on common slip, trip and fall hazards found in the workplace and at home will be available.

Falls are by far the leading unintentional injury accounting for more than 8.7 million emergency room visits each year in the United States, according to Injury Facts 2012 Edition. Further, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention indicates one in every three adults age 65 and older falls each year.

Remove common fall hazards:

  • Keep floors and stairs clean and clear of clutter
  • Maintain good lighting both indoors and on outdoor walkways
  • Secure electrical cords out of traffic areas
  • Clean up all spills immediately
  • Wear sensible footwear

“Grainger is proud to sponsor the Council's Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls week,'" said Deb Oler, vice president and general manager, Grainger Brand. "Slips, trips and falls are the leading cause of workplace injuries. Grainger, North America's largest supplier of safety products, is committed to helping businesses keep their employees safe, reduce costs associated with workplace injuries and enhance their overall productivity. We encourage businesses to spend time educating their employees about ways to ensure greater safety in the workplace."

The Council is calling on organizations, communities and the public to help share this information and encourage safe behaviors. Posters, tip sheets and quizzes are available for free download at nsc.org/nsm. Additional materials are available for NSC members to prevent slips, trips and falls.
