R-Squared Conference Receives Funding from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

$25,000 Grant Supports Creativity and Innovation in Libraries

TELLURIDE, Colo.--()--R-Squared – The Risk & Reward Conference was recently awarded a $25,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help support the innovative library conference being held this September. The grant funds keynote speaker Josh Linkner, New York Times bestselling author of Disciplined Dreaming: A Proven System to Drive Breakthrough Creativity. In addition, the Foundation will fund out-of-state scholarships for creative library professionals interested in attending the conference.

Scheduled for Sept. 9-11, 2012, in Telluride, Colo., R-Squared – The Risk & Reward Conference is based on the premise that libraries must take smart risks to move the industry forward. With the help of change agents from retail, architecture, technology and marketing, the conference will address innovations in customer curiosity, creative spaces, abundant community and culture. Attendees will leave equipped with a support system of risk-embracing peers and the courage to implement creative new ideas.

“Libraries and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have benefited from a strong relationship for many years, and this grant is a natural extension of that relationship,” says Shelley Walchak, R-Squared project manager and senior consultant for library community programs at the Colorado State Library. “This funding is key to the success of the R-Squared Conference in that it will provide assistance in helping libraries innovate and grow, securing their essential role in our communities.”

Josh Linkner, New York Times bestselling author of Disciplined Dreaming: A Proven System to Drive Breakthrough Creativity, will kick off the conference as keynote on Monday, Sept. 10. His mission is to “make the world more creative”; he’ll share thoughts on creativity as a commodity and the characteristics of creative individuals during his keynote discussion with R-Squared’s 400 expected guests. ABOUT R-SQUARED

In February 2011, a group of Colorado library professionals began brainstorming how libraries can avoid extinction, reinvent themselves and strengthen their role as vital parts of their communities. With that, R-Squared – The Risk & Reward Conference was born. Members of the Colorado State Library, Colorado Library Consortium (a 501(c)3), Anythink, Wilkinson Public Library and others have partnered with Denver-based marketing agency Ricochet Ideas to develop a way to share the philosophies that have inspired some of the most inventive libraries in the nation with others who are interested in creative thinking in libraries.
