Great Lakes Biodiesel Inc. announces Final Stage of Construction of Canada’s Largest Biodiesel Plant

WELLAND, Ontario--()--Great Lakes Biodiesel Inc. (GLB) announces it entered the final stage of construction of Canada’s largest biodiesel plant opening in Fall, 2012. Located in Welland, Ontario, the plant is approved by the Government of Canada’s ecoENERGY Program, having annual production capacity of 170 million litres of biodiesel.

“By Fall 2012, the Great Lakes Biodiesel plant will be the largest operating biodiesel plant in Canada. The objective of GLB is to provide Canadian oil refiners and obligated parties, that are required to blend biodiesel with diesel under the Federal two per cent mandate with a dependable, high quality, domestically produced ASTM biodiesel,” said Barry Kramble, CEO, Great Lakes Biodiesel Inc.

The construction of the GLB biodiesel plant represents a positive step forward for developing sustainable energy in Canada. GLB is focused on preserving the environment though the production and supply of emission-reducing biodiesel, which will ultimately contribute to the reduction of Canada’s ecological footprint and cleaner air for all Canadians.

Through the leadership of the Honourable Minister Joe Oliver, Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN) is working to advance clean energy solutions and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across Canada. In December 2011, under NRCAN’s ecoENERGY Program Great Lakes Biodiesel was approved to receive a production incentive and manufacture 170 million litres per year of biodiesel, thus making GLB the largest producer of biodiesel in Canada under the federal ecoENERGY Program.

"The Grain Farmers of Ontario look forward to the Great Lakes Biodiesel plant opening this fall,” said Barry Senft, CEO of the Grain Farmers of Ontario. “We see great potential for biodiesel in the province through the proven environmental benefits from lower emissions and the opportunities it brings through expanded markets to our 28,000 farmer members. We would like to see a two percent biodiesel mandate implemented by our provincial government to encourage even further development of this kind in Ontario.”

Great Lakes Biodiesel Inc. (GLB) is located in Welland, Ontario. GLB is a member of the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association. Once construction is completed the GLB facility will be the largest biodiesel plant in Canada producing ASTM 6751 quality biodiesel made from vegetable oils and more specifically from canola and soybean crops. The plant will use state of the art Desmet Ballestra production equipment, which is in service in over 80 biodiesel plants around the world. The final product is a clean-burning, renewable, organic-based fuel that is blended into conventional diesel fuel resulting in a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
