PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Peirce College, Philadelphia’s leading private, non-profit, four-year accredited institution for working adult learners, introduced a new service for students who need guidance at specific points during their academic journey so they can reach their ultimate destination: graduation.
A major challenge for students, particularly working adults, is acclimating to college life within a short amount of time, while navigating the resource network of support services within their college. Delayed response to students’ needs can result in persistency problems for students—possibly jeopardizing their studies, even obtaining a degree. It can also create retention issues for the institution.
“Most of our students are first generation college degree seekers and working adults. Often, they do not have parents or other role models who have completed a college education and who can guide them. College life is a big adjustment for students, especially if they are balancing family and work,” explains Nadine Maher, Dean, Enrollment Management for Peirce College.
Even though Peirce does everything possible to help them to be successful, students do not always advocate for themselves, Maher says. At Peirce, where students are considered customers, the College identified the need for a wider range of troubleshooting support to help students move through the College. The Guided Peirce Services (GPS) team is the result.
GPS is a lifeline—from day one—for the student, Maher points out. “This is a feature not readily duplicated in other institutions. It is yet another extension of Peirce’s customer service and of our brand: the college that really works for working adults,” she says. “As an organization we continually strive to improve the level of customer service and increase the value of the experience students receive to earn their degree—from enrollment to graduation.”
GPS is a dedicated group of Peirce experts that connects students with all of Peirce’s support resources, and, more importantly, shows them how to use those resources. They oversee the continuous enrollment of students by session, term and year, in collaboration with the student’s academic advisor. GPS team members serve as problem solvers or facilitators, helping students stay on track with their studies. “Just like a fitness club, where members can go to the concierge for direction to resources,” Maher adds.
While many higher education institutions provide a pool of advisors, at Peirce there is a dedicated academic advisor, a dedicated Career Services function, as well as Walker Center representatives that offer a range of support services. Now, students also have a GPS team to help connect them to the resources they need, no matter where they are in their journey at Peirce.
To communicate the new service, Peirce has created reference tools for students’ welcome packs, dispensers and signage in student-facing areas, as well as plasma screen messages, website portal flashes, periodic student eblasts, updates to its Facebook and Twitter feeds, and a blog post detailing the GPS service.
