Axion International (AXIH) Announces Second Order for Recycled Composite Switch Ties from San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART)

BART’s use of Axion’s “green” product will divert more than 115,000 lbs of plastic from landfills

NEW PROVIDENCE, N.J.--()--Axion International (OTCBB: AXIH), the developer of Recycled Structural Composite (RSC™) technology used to produce 100% recycled plastic ECOTRAX™ railroad ties and STRUXURE™ industrial building materials, announced today that they have received their second purchase order from San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) for switch ties. Axion’s sustainable products are gaining in market share and represent a green solution to the rail industry. Unlike traditional materials, Ecotrax™ Ties have no chemicals or preservatives added and can be reused at the end of their useful lifecycle, thereby eliminating standard disposal issues.

“We’re very pleased by BART’s continued environmental commitment,” stated Axion Director of Business Development, William Jordan V. “The fact that Axion can provide sustainable, low maintenance products at competitive pricing will prove to be a long-term benefit in the Bay area. Railroads are increasingly faced with tougher environmental standards and are dealing with stringent disposal regulations. Quality long timbers for use in switches are becoming harder and harder to source for lines throughout the US. ECOTRAX™ ties are the superior solution to historical materials. They help to solve many of the challenges facing today’s railroads.”

“Using recycled plastic ties manufactured by Axion makes economic sense but we are also excited by the environmental implications,” said BART Board President John McPartland. “Using these ties only adds to our long-standing dedication to environmental responsibility. There’s a good reason that the Federal Transit Administration has named BART the cleanest system.”

For the BART order Axion’s rail ties will range from 10’ to 22’ (3.5m to 6.7m). The total amount of plastic diverted from landfills is estimated to be about 115,000 lbs of post-consumer plastic.

Axion’s ECOTRAX™ ties are engineered using the company’s patented 100% recycled formula. ECOTRAX™ ties have helped divert millions of pounds of plastic bottles and waste into useful products that will last decades. Because ECOTRAX™ ties are extremely strong, durable and low-maintenance they are an excellent, cost-effective alternative to traditional materials.
