David Weidman, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Celanese Corporation, Honored with 2012 Society of Chemical Industry Medal

Award to be presented March 13, 2012, in New York City

PHILADELPHIA & DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Society of Chemical Industry, America International Group, announced today that the SCI Chemical Industry Medal will be awarded to David Weidman, chairman and chief executive officer, Celanese Corporation (NYSE: CE).

“Dave Weidman has shown tremendous business leadership in an evolving, and often volatile, global economy”

“Dave Weidman has shown tremendous business leadership in an evolving, and often volatile, global economy,” said Stephanie A. Burns, chairman of SCI. “He led Celanese’s transformation from a German publicly-traded company to an American publicly-traded company and instilled in it a culture of continuous improvement, sustainability and safety. And he navigated Celanese through the recession, continuing its global expansion and challenging the company and the industry to become more strategic and more resilient in the process.”

Weidman will receive the medal at a dinner in his honor March 13, 2012, at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York.

About David Weidman

David Weidman is chairman and chief executive officer of Celanese Corporation, a Fortune 500 global technology and specialty materials company based in Dallas, Texas. Weidman has served as president and chief executive officer since December 2004 and was appointed chairman by the board of directors in February 2007.

A frequent speaker on change, Weidman led Celanese’s transformation from a German-based company traded on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (through a private equity transaction) to a (fully independent) global company traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

Under Weidman’s leadership Celanese has accelerated its globalization and innovation, moving rapidly into regions of high growth with expanded product offerings that leverage the company’s advanced proprietary technologies. Today Celanese sets the highest global standards in operations and safety. The company was recognized by the American Chemistry Council with the 2009 Responsible Care Sustained Excellence Award and the 2010 Responsible Care Initiative Award. As a result, Celanese is now a recognized leader in globalization, innovation, sustainability and safety.

Weidman is past chairman of the Society for Chemical Industry and of the American Chemistry Council. He is a member of the board of The Conservation Fund and serves on several advisory councils at the University of Michigan and Brigham Young University.
