Sacramento Region Clean Tech Companies Generate Revenue Exceeding $1.5 Billion

CleanStart Report Shows 131 Percent Growth Since 2008

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--()--Sacramento area clean tech manufacturing and design companies generated more than $1.5 billion in revenue in 2011, an increase of 131 percent from combined 2008 revenue of $650 million, according to a report released today by the Sacramento Area Regional Technology Alliance (SARTA).

The 2012 SARTA CleanStart Progress Report also indicated that regional employment with clean tech manufacturing and design companies grew to more than 2,200 jobs compared to approximately 1,800 jobs three years ago. The total number of area clean tech companies currently totals 96 compared to 106 a year ago, as indicated in an updated interactive online map showing their locations.

“It’s clear that our focus on growing the clean tech segment of our regional economy is paying off and we expect to see continued revenue and employment growth moving forward,” said SARTA CEO Meg Arnold.

The SARTA report also highlights a recent Brookings Institute study indicating that the Sacramento region’s clean economy growth is significantly outpacing clean economy growth in the U.S. overall. According to the report, Sacramento ranks 12th out of 100 metropolitan regions in the total number of clean economy and related jobs and seventh for green job growth.

“Much of the recent growth is from solar and energy efficiency businesses,” said Gary Simon, SARTA CleanStart chair. “We’ve made good progress, and have significant opportunity for continued growth across the entire sector.”

CleanStart, sponsored by SMUD, the City of Sacramento, Ernst & Young, Drexel University, Sacramento State and others, has a long-term goal to bring 10,000 new clean-tech jobs and $5 billion in revenue to the Sacramento region.

SARTA was established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 2001, and is accelerating the growth and development of the technology sector in the nine-county Sacramento region by linking technology leaders, entrepreneurs, investors, service providers, community organizations and educational institutions.
