The Climate Corporation Expands Operations with New Office in Seattle, Washington

Big Data and Extreme Weather Combine To Drive Business Growth

SAN FRANCISCO--()--The Climate Corporation today announced the official opening of its newest office, located in Seattle, Washington. The Climate Corporation combines Big Data, climatology and agronomy to protect the $3 trillion global agriculture industry with fully automated weather insurance products. The location was chosen because of its business-friendly environment as well as offering The Climate Corporation the opportunity to take advantage of local talent.

"Our Seattle office plays a critical role in our aggressive growth strategy," notes David Friedberg, Chief Executive Officer at The Climate Corporation. "The Climate Corporation thrives on the talent of our people, and being in Seattle connects us to passionate engineering talent that is excited about taking on big challenges."

The Seattle office is home to a diverse – and growing – engineering team. The Climate Corporation is currently hiring for numerous roles in Seattle including Big Data Engineer, Back-End Software Engineer, Rails Software Engineer, and other openings.

Seattle is attractive to The Climate Corporation as it is home to engineers and technologists with experience building world-class software solutions in a variety of industries. With a complex climate modeling platform, The Climate Corporation is a large user of Amazon Elastic MapReduce (EMR), a Web service that allows the company to efficiently process vast amounts of data. The Climate Corporation's technology platform ingests weather measurements from 2.5 million locations and forecasts from major climate models on a daily basis, and processes that data along with 150 billion soil observations to generate 10 trillion weather simulation data points used in the company's weather insurance pricing and risk analysis systems.

Using this platform, The Climate Corporation protects farmers from the financial impact of adverse weather – the cause of more than 90% of crop loss – with Total Weather Insurance™ (TWI), the first and only full-season weather insurance program. Based on the success of the first generation of TWI, the company closed a $42 million round of Series B funding in March 2011 led by Google Ventures and Khosla Ventures. In the last six months alone the company has more than tripled its headcount to support its aggressive product and sales expansion.

In November, The Climate Corporation announced its next generation of Total Weather Insurance, TWI Corn 2012™ and TWI Soybean 2012™, both of which provide unprecedented profit protection for growers against increasingly extreme weather.
