FirstFuel Awarded Department of Defense Contract for FY 2012 New Installation Energy Technology Demonstrations

FirstFuel’s Rapid Building Assessment Platform Provides Zero-Touch Energy Performance Analysis to Improve Energy Efficiency Across the DoD’s Building Portfolio

BOSTON--()--FirstFuel Software, the commercial building energy analytics company, today announced that it has been selected by the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) as one of 27 new projects to demonstrate emerging energy technologies on military installations. As part of its Installation Energy Test Bed initiative, the DoD will implement FirstFuel’s Rapid Building Assessment (RBA) platform to perform zero-touch energy performance analysis across its building portfolio, identifying opportunities to significantly reduce energy spending.

The DoD has 300,000 buildings across its military installations and spends nearly $4 billion a year on energy. The DoD selected FirstFuel to efficiently benchmark the consumption of its portfolio of buildings and recommend custom operational and retrofit energy savings measures. The operational recommendations lead directly to savings in the buildings, while ongoing monitoring of consumption data against a baseline ensures verification of savings.

“With major organizations like the DoD, it’s incredibly difficult to find cost efficient solutions to help improve energy efficiency on a broad scale,” said Swapnil Shah, co-founder and CEO of FirstFuel Software. “The FirstFuel platform offers the scalability the DoD needs to significantly cut energy costs across all of its buildings, without requiring on-site audits or devices. We are honored to be chosen alongside some of the industry’s biggest players in helping the DoD achieve its goal.”

Each of the selected projects will help generate the cost and performance data needed to validate the promising technologies, allowing them to be fielded and commercialized more rapidly. These technologies will enable DoD’s installations to operate using less energy, and will improve energy security by allowing installations to maintain critical activities even if the commercial electric grid is disrupted. The Installation Energy Test Bed initiative plays a key role in testing, evaluating, and scaling up innovative new energy technologies to improve the department’s energy security and reduce its facility energy costs.

FirstFuel Software and the additional projects were selected from 575 proposals submitted by private firms, universities and federal organizations. The fiscal 2012 awards cover five areas: smart microgrids and energy storage to increase the energy security of DoD’s installations; advanced component technologies to improve building energy efficiency; advanced building energy management and control technologies; tools and processes for design, assessment, and decision-making associated with energy use and management; and technologies for renewable energy generation on installations.
