Toshiba High Performance, Energy Efficient Drives for Tiered Storage Solutions Qualified by Supermicro®

Toshiba Enterprise Drives Combined with Supermicro Server and Storage Platforms Provide Customers Maximized Performance with Green Power Efficiency

IRVINE, Calif.--()--Toshiba’s Storage Products Business Unit of Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc, today announced that a complete tiered solution of its enterprise hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid state drives (SSDs) have been qualified by Super Micro Computer, Inc., a global leader in delivering advanced computing solutions to the enterprise. As part of Supermicro’s storage offerings, this ensures enterprise customers will be able to deploy Toshiba drives in each tier of the solution—from SSDs and HDDs for tier 0 and tier 1 storage requirements, to HDDs for nearline storage applications.

The qualified drives include:

  • MKx001GRZB enterprise-class SSD: 2.5-inch SSD series, representing the highest level of a tiered storage architecture, the MKx001GRZB is offered in capacities of 100GB, 200GB, and 400GB1 and utilize the latest 32 nanometer (nm) enterprise grade single-level cell (SLC) NAND flash memory and 6Gb/s Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface. The MKx001GRZB series is designed for enterprise customers requiring the highest performance, endurance, and lower power consumption in mission- critical applications. Combined with a low power requirement of only 6.5 watts at operation, the Toshiba SSD also delivers an impressive power efficiency rating of 13,800 IOPS/watt.
  • MBE2147RC: 2.5-inch SAS HDD series with storage capacity of up to 147GB1 targeted at a wide range of enterprise applications, from high-end servers to disk storage arrays. With extremely low power consumption (4.1 watts/idle), 15,000 RPM speed and 6BG/sec SAS interface, the MBE2147RC series is an environmentally-focused solution for enterprise applications requiring performance plus power efficiency in mission-critical applications.
  • MBF2600RC/RE series: 2.5-inch SAS HDD series which offers industry leading storage capacity of up to 600GB1 for the most demanding server applications. The MBF2-RC series drives feature a 10,025 RPM spin speed, 6 Gb/sec SAS interface, and an enhanced power condition state technology enabling lower RPM spin speeds when not in use, allowing for up to 28% reduction2 in power consumption.
  • MKx001TRKB/MKx002TSKB series: 3.5” HDDs are designed to support enterprise applications where reliability, high capacity, and performance are required. With a top storage capacity of 2TB,1 7,200 RPM spin speed, 6Gb/sec Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) and 3Gb/sec Serial ATA (SATA) interfaces these drives provide 24/7 operation, Error Correction (ECC), Rotational Vibration (RV) Technology for multiple drive systems and 1.2 million hours MTBF.

“Enterprises are increasingly deploying tiered storage networks as a cost-effective way to maximize both storage performance and efficiency in a world driven by ever-increasing amounts of corporate data,” said Joel Hagberg, vice president of marketing at Toshiba’s Storage Products Business Unit. “Toshiba and Supermicro are both focused on delivering advanced tiered storage solutions that enable enterprises to meet that challenge. Today’s announcement builds on that on-going relationship and we look forward to even greater collaboration with Supermicro to meet future customer needs.”

“Supermicro’s server and storage Building Block Solutions® provide the most configurable platforms for deploying scalable high-performance, high-efficiency, tiered storage solutions,” said Wally Liaw, Vice President, Sales International at Supermicro. “Our expanding qualification of Toshiba’s enterprise-class HDDs and SSDs provides Supermicro customers with a greater range of performance oriented, power conserving storage options optimized for sophisticated data management applications.”

1. One Terabyte (1TB) = 1,000 Gigabytes (GB). One Gigabyte (1GB) means 109 = 1,000,000,000 bytes using powers of 10. A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity using powers of 2 for the definition of 1GB = 230 = 1,073,741,824 bytes, and therefore shows less storage capacity. Available storage capacity will also be less if the computer includes one or more pre-installed operating systems, pre-installed software applications, or media content. Actual formatted capacity may vary.

2. This model added an additional low-power idle state that provides 28% lower idle power consumption relative to previous generation’s idle power consumption.
