TwitchTV Validates Rising Popularity of Video Game Streaming with Rapid Record-Setting Growth

TwitchTV shatters growth metrics with 1,000 premium gaming partners and more than 12 million monthly unique users becoming a top online gaming property

SAN FRANCISCO--()--TwitchTV, the world’s largest video game broadcasting community, today announced updated growth metrics for the second half of 2011 that illustrate the momentum of the video game streaming movement. The site now engages more than 12 million unique viewers every month, has more than 1,000 premium partners, and has received more than 80,000 downloads of their iPhone mobile application in less than a month since the app’s launch.

“The tremendous growth we have experienced over the last six months is indicative of several burgeoning trends,” said Emmett Shear, CEO of TwitchTV. “Not only are gamers elevating their interest in watching others play in a community-driven fashion, but our partners providing the content have taken streaming to new heights. We attribute our role as the premier destination for the movement’s top players, teams, leagues and events to the innovative technology we’ve implemented that enables our partners to monetize their offerings in a manner we haven’t seen before.”

After TwitchTV launched in June of 2011, they unveiled their premium TwitchTV Partner Program. This was a revenue-sharing option for top content producers comprised of the world’s leading gaming video broadcasters. Today, TwitchTV announced that the program is now more than 1,000 members strong with top partners including Electronic Sports League (ESL), Day[9]TV, IGN Pro League (IPL), Major League Gaming (MLG), and North American Star League (NASL), among many others.

“I’ve watched as TwitchTV exploded over the last year,” said Sven Hoffmann, the Managing Director of ESL TV. “They’re a great partner and one of the keys to our success in delivering our content to eSports fans around the world. Not only do they offer an additional revenue stream you can’t get anywhere else, but they support the gaming community in a way that is genuine. They’re all gamers themselves, so you know they’re there for the community.”

The TwitchTV audience views video game streams in many ways including on-site at TwitchTV, via embeddable video players on partner sites, and with the recently-launched iPhone application. Collectively, this viewership eclipsed 12 million unique viewers in November, placing TwitchTV in the upper echelons of online gaming properties worldwide. In addition, the site has experienced a steady 11% month-over-month growth rate since launching in June of 2011.
