SAN FRANCISCO--()--Federated Media Publishing, which powers the Independent Web, today released the results of a survey conducted to better understand holiday trends according to authors on the Independent Web. The online survey polled more than 1,200 influential Federated Media and Lijit Networks publishers and expert bloggers from the robust Foodbuzz and The Clever Girls Collective communities.

Key Insights

  • Classics still count - They may provide exciting, online culinary content, but ironically 61 percent of FMP’s food bloggers said that a printed cookbook was the hottest gift for foodies this holiday season.
  • Mind and body BOTH matter - Books and magazines took the top spot for healthy living gift option with 68 percent of the votes, while 65 percent agreed that workout clothing is the perfect gift.
  • DIY isn’t losing steam - A whopping 70 percent of FMP’ food bloggers said that they expect to see more homemade food items given as gifts this holiday season.
  • Everyone wants an iPad - The Apple iPad continues to lead the pack as the most coveted technology gift with 72 percent of the vote, while Amazon’s Kindle comes in at 48 percent and Apple’s iPhone takes third place at 45 percent.
  • Platform wars continue: Apple vs. Android - Products using the Android platform come in lower with smartphones nabbing 36 percent of the vote and tablets taking 27 percent.
  • Savvy kids want tech too - Technology also dominates the list of hot gifts for kids with tablets and MP3 players taking the top two spots at 57 percent and 54 percent, respectively.
  • 3-D TV is hype, not must have - Despite all of the hype, the reality is that only 15 percent of FMP’s bloggers consider 3-D televisions ‘hot’.

Quote

“Our authors invest deeply in their relationship with their communities and care about bringing them a unique and thoughtful perspective, so naturally they had some strong opinions when it came to discussing holiday trends,” said Deanna Brown, CEO, Federated Media Publishing. “They recognize the value of a beautifully designed, content-rich printed cookbook or in spending the time on DIY projects that truly demonstrate how much you care.”
