Layer 7 Achieved Highest Score for Both Current Offering and Strategy

SOA, or Service Oriented Architecture, defines a modern approach to application integration. Increasingly, SOA is the foundation for application integrations that span the enterprise, partners, the cloud and mobile apps. Forrester characterizes SOA Application Gateways as one of four major SOA specialty product categories, along with Enterprise Service Buses (ESBs), SOA Management solutions and SOA service lifecycle management solutions. In a SOA architecture, a “SOA Application Gateway sits as a control point in the network path between a set of SOA services and the consumers that use the services,” explains Forrester.

In defining the SOA application gateway category, Forrester placed boundaries according to the overall functionality provided (security, attack protection and lightweight mediation functions) and the product’s primary placement in SOA platform topology (typically as an intermediary).

Vendors were evaluated against 45 criteria, which were grouped into three high-level buckets: Current Offering, Strategy and Market Presence. Layer 7 had the highest score in both the Current Offering and Strategy categories. Leaders were recognized for their broad and deep support for messaging styles, attack protection, trust enablement and content transformation.
