New Study Shows Erchonia’s Zerona Laser Non-Invasively Reduces Upper Arm Circumference

McKINNEY, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Erchonia, the global leader in low-level laser healthcare applications, announces the results of a new study which showed that its Zerona laser is effective in non-invasively reducing the circumference of the upper arms, a notoriously difficult area to treat through diet, exercise or even surgery.

“We specifically designed this new trial to look at the effects of low-level laser therapy on direct treatment of the upper arms to totally negate confounding variables such as diet and measurement errors”

Already FDA-approved for the non-invasive body contouring of the waist, hips and thighs, the Zerona laser showed significant effectiveness in treating upper arms in a recent 40-subject, double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled clinical study. Subjects in the study were strictly screened to only include males and females aged 18 to 65 who were willing to maintain a regular diet and exercise during the time of the study. The study excluded all patients with any confounding medical, surgical, or other problems.

All subjects were treated with a total of 6 painless 20-minute treatments with either the Zerona 635 nm low-level laser or a sham laser device over a 2 week period. Upon completion of the treatments and at two weeks post-treatment, the active treatment group showed approximately a 4 cm combined reduction in the bilateral circumference, and the sham treatment group showed essentially no change. Additionally in the active treatment group, 60 percent of the subjects met the success criteria and experienced a combined arm circumference reduction of 1.25 cm or greater compared with 0 percent of the patients treated with a sham laser. All of the results were highly statistically significant. Both groups showed no change in body mass index (BMI).

The study also found that subjective assessment was significantly positive only in the Zerona treatment group; there were highly significant differences in satisfaction, perceived change by the treatment, and expectations being met by the Zerona treatment group versus the sham treatment group. Patients reported no pain or discomfort whatsoever and no adverse events were noted.

“We specifically designed this new trial to look at the effects of low-level laser therapy on direct treatment of the upper arms to totally negate confounding variables such as diet and measurement errors,” says Mark Steven Nestor, M.D., Ph.D., of the Center for Clinical and Cosmetic Research, who was the principal investigator. “Our conclusion was that the Zerona device was significantly more effective at reduction of arm circumference than sham treatments at every time point. This study clearly confirms that the reduction in circumference of the upper arms is due to the local and/or systemic effects of the Zerona device without any effect of diet, exercise, or change in BMI.”

“We’re very encouraged by Zerona’s performance in this study,” says Charlie Shanks, vice president of Erchonia. “The results of this data were presented at the International 5-CC Conference in Cannes, France, and we are in the process of preparing these results for peer-reviewed publication. We also plan to present the results at the 2012 South Beach Symposium.”

Zerona was already approved by the FDA for non-invasive circumferential reduction based on a double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-site clinical trial. Using low-level laser light, the Zerona laser creates a pore in fat cells and stimulates fat to leak out of the cell. The cell deflates, but is not destroyed, and the fat is naturally processed by the lymphatic system as waste. After six treatments, one every other day for two weeks, patients lose an average of 3.65 inches from their waists, hips, and thighs without pain, side effects, or downtime.
