Science Applications International Corp., the contractor where the records compromise occurred, did not inform Tricare patients about the breach for at least two weeks. The company has made patients responsible for monitoring whether their identities have been further compromised. According to Javelin Strategy and Research, identity theft cost some 11 million Americans approximately $58 billion in 2009.
Those affected include patients from Tricare’s Southern Region, which includes Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.
