Peirce College Welcomes Parent University Students to Second Year of Classes

Parents of Philadelphia Schoolchildren Take the Next Step to Earn College Degree

PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--On September 13 at 5:30 p.m., Peirce College will formally congratulate Parent University students on the successful completion of their first year of studies toward an Associate in Arts in General Studies degree. The students are participants in the School District of Philadelphia’s Parent University, which assists parents in supporting their children to achieve academic success. Parent University also provides opportunities and support for parents to achieve their own personal academic and non-academic goals.

Representing Peirce College at the event will be James J. Mergiotti, President and Chief Executive Officer, and Nadine Maher, Dean, Enrollment Management.

Dr. Leroy D. Nunery II, Acting Superintendent, will represent the School District of Philadelphia.

Peirce created the program last year for Parent University. The three-year degree program is the first of its kind facilitated through Parent University, which is managed by the School District of Philadelphia’s Office of Parent, Family, Community Engagement & Faith-Based Partnerships.

The program features the core general studies components as defined by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), including humanities, arts, communications, social sciences, mathematics, technology and science courses, and culminates in a capstone course in leadership designed to integrate the general education skill sets introduced throughout the program. By adhering to the PDE guidelines for general education, the Peirce program positions graduates for transfer to a four-year degree program at Peirce or other regional colleges and universities.

The Peirce partnership with Parent University is part of the College’s commitment to the City of Philadelphia’s education initiative to increase the number of residents attaining college degrees.

Eliminating obstacles and increasing access for potential college students is critical and is an area where Peirce College places a significant amount of emphasis. As a Parent U partner, Peirce continues to fulfill its historical mission of providing practical higher education for working adult students and further expand its contribution to the educational and workforce development of the Philadelphia region.
