Samsung is the Best Selling TV Brand in North America for First Half of 2011, Reports DisplaySearch

Widens leadership in LED TV and 3D TV categories; Samsung TVs also take 4 spots in Quixel Research’s Q2’2011 top 5 Best Sellers

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J.--()--Samsung Electronics America Inc., a market leader and award-winning innovator in consumer electronics, continues to be the top-selling TV brand in North America based on recently released data from market research company DisplaySearch.

In the first half of 2011, Samsung TVs accounted for 20.6 percent of the TV market in North America, its highest market-share position since 2009, representing a 1.2 percentage point increase compared to the same period in 2010. From the first quarter to the second quarter of this year, Samsung also improved its dollar value market share from 26.6 percent to 27.7 percent.

Samsung posted market shares of 23.8 percent and 30.2 percent in terms of units shipped and revenue respectively for LED TVs, and reclaimed the top spot for LCD TVs with 18.2 and 25.4 percent share each.

In 3D TV, Samsung commands a dollar share of 42.9 percent and reinforced its dominance by growing units market share to 45.4 percent in the first half of this year. This includes both plasma and LED 3D TV.

Newly released data from market intelligence firm Quixel Research also confirms that four out of five of the top TV models sold in the U.S. in the second quarter of 2011 were Samsung TVs (based on dollar value).

“Consumers want TVs that have stylish designs, outstanding picture quality and smart features so that they can enjoy a quality home entertainment experience. We’re also seeing increased interest in larger screen sizes and expect this to continue as consumers embrace smart 3D content at home,” said John Revie, senior vice president of Home Entertainment, Samsung Electronics America, Inc. “As a leader, we remain committed to delivering the best experience without compromise.”

Samsung’s flagship TV models, the LED D8000 and the LED D7000, are now available in screen sizes of 60” and 65”. Samsung has also introduced 64” plasma TVs across various models, to meet the demand for big-screen HDTVs. In fact, according to market research firm IHS iSuppli, more than one out of every five TV purchases in the U.S. during the first quarter had screens 50 inches or larger, an all-time high for bigger-screen TV purchases.

Samsung is also seeing strong consumer interest in TV apps. Since the launch of its HDTV store Samsung Apps, Samsung has achieved a 500-percent growth in content offerings, with more than 900 apps now available globally. Downloads of Samsung Apps are rapidly approaching 10 million and doubling every three months among consumers worldwide.
