AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Virtual Bridges today announced it has joined OpenStack, an open source cloud infrastructure project. Founded by Rackspace Hosting and NASA, OpenStack is a global software community of developers collaborating on a standard and flexible open source cloud operating system for both public and private clouds. OpenStack complements Virtual Bridges’ efforts to deliver high-performing, scalable solutions that meet the needs of any organization, whether hosted on site or in the cloud.
More than 100 organizations are involved in the OpenStack ecosystem, working to establish industry standards, promote integration, eliminate the fear of vendor lock in and speed the adoption of cloud technologies by both service providers and enterprises. While first generation VDI offerings require organizations to invest in expensive proprietary virtualization solutions, second generation products take advantage of open source to offer superior scalability, performance and security, all at a lower price point.
Virtual Bridges VERDE, the industry’s first VDI Gen2 solution, leverages the lightweight framework and portability of the open source KVM hypervisor and uses the SPICE protocol to provide a high-quality user experience for remote access, similar to being in a LAN environment. Whether public, private or hybrid cloud environments, VDI Gen2 allows users to access their applications, files and documents from any location, any device.
OpenStack currently features three core software projects:
- OpenStack Compute: open source software and standards for large-scale deployments of automatically provisioned virtual compute instances
- OpenStack Object Storage: open source software and standards for large-scale, redundant storage of static objects
- OpenStack Image Service: provides discovery, registration, and delivery services for virtual disk images
“VDI serves as the foundation for many cloud technologies, offering scalable, flexible and cost-effective solutions that deliver dynamic desktops to an evolving user base,” said Jim Curtin, CEO of Virtual Bridges. “Compatibility with public OpenStack clouds means organizations will be prepared for the future, making it easy to migrate data and applications to the public cloud when the conditions are right. Together we can accelerate the acceptance of open-standards and drive involvement, making it easier for both providers and customers to benefit from the cloud.”
Virtual Bridges is seeing significant traction as the market for cloud services continues to grow. Service providers, enterprises and midsize organizations are turning to VDI Gen2 to accelerate the delivery of cost-effective cloud-based VDI workloads. VERDE’s new StorageSaver slashes storage costs, long viewed as one of the top inhibitors to VDI. Additionally, organizations enjoy VERDE’s ease of use, centralized management and support for both Windows and Linux desktops.
