LOUISVILLE, Ky.--()--Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) turns 50 today, and thousands of its associates, supporters and friends will celebrate at the KFC Yum! Center in Humana’s corporate hometown of Louisville, Ky. The anniversary event will feature remarks from Humana Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mike McCallister; Humana Co-founder and Chairman Emeritus David A. Jones; former board chair and current board member David A. Jones, Jr.; as well as acknowledgements from Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer. The University of Louisville pep band and the River City Drum Corp will play, and a comedy troupe will perform sketches that chronicle Humana’s history and future aspirations.

Yesterday afternoon, David A. Jones, David A. Jones, Jr., Humana board members and guests joined Mike McCallister when he rang The Closing Bell at the New York Stock Exchange – in recognition of Humana turning 50. David A. Jones and the late Wendell Cherry founded Humana as a nursing home company on August 18, 1961. Today, Humana is a leading health care company that offers a wide range of insurance products and health and wellness services that incorporate an integrated approach to lifelong well-being.

Over the last several months, to celebrate Humana’s 50th anniversary year, Humana has sponsored events to honor its members, business partners, Humana associates and their families. The company also celebrated its tradition of service and social responsibility by giving back to the communities in which it operates, primarily through The Humana Foundation and through associate volunteerism.

“Humana’s success through the years would not have been possible without the tremendous support of the communities where we operate, and the people – especially Humana associates and the customers they serve – who have made this company what it is today,” McCallister said. “Humana’s dedication to health and lifelong well-being has defined our company throughout its history. Today’s celebration will enable us to not only reflect on Humana’s past but also look to what the future holds for the enterprise.”

A team of Humana associates gathered ideas from across the company as it planned this week’s celebration and coordinated related events over the past year. Highlights include:

  • Multigenerational Playground Build – Humana and 125 of its South Florida associates built and donated an innovative multigenerational playground in Lauderhill, Fla. The new space has traditional playground equipment for kids as well as five standalone exercise stations for adults and senior citizens. The space also includes picnic tables, benches, shade areas, and an enhanced walking path all constructed by Humana associates.
  • Well-being Fair at Louisville’s Bardstown Road Farmers’ Market – Humana partnered with Peopleforbikes.org and provided blood pressure and BMI screenings as well as wellness checks for bikes.
  • Associate Recognition – Humana associates used an internal website to praise one another for their good work. They celebrated the things they do every day to make Humana the successful company it’s been for the past half-century.
  • Humana’s Story – A book has been created filled with photos and the story of Humana’s past and present. It documents Humana’s legacy: the company’s longtime commitment to people, and its ever-growing dedication to helping them achieve lifelong well-being.

From its early years as a nursing home company … to its transformation in the 1970s and 80s into America’s largest hospital company … to the early 1990s when Humana spun off its hospitals to focus on health benefits … to today, Humana has a history of helping people and comprehensive plans to continue that legacy.
