Award-Winning Forensic Toxicologist Dan Isenschmid Joins NMS Labs

WILLOW GROVE, Pa.--()--Dr. Dan Isenschmid has joined the toxicology staff at NMS Labs where his expertise will expand even further the outstanding resources currently available to the death investigation and criminal justice communities. He brings to the company over 20 years experience in forensic toxicology, and many benefits of his years of leadership and casework in the field. He joins NMS Labs industry-leading team of experts including seven toxicologists certified by the American Board of Forensic Toxicology (ABFT).

Dr. Barry Logan, NMS Labs Director of Forensic Services said yesterday, “Dan is an outstanding addition to our team of expert toxicologists. He is a widely recognized authority on postmortem toxicology, drug interpretation and postmortem redistribution issues. His work on deaths involving cocaine, and fentanyl and other opiates, and his connections in the international toxicology community will add to our unrivaled expert team.”

Dr. Isenschmid has served most recently as Deputy Chief Toxicologist at the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office in Detroit since 1996, He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in pathology and forensic toxicology, respectively, from the University of Maryland at Baltimore, School of Medicine, and was the recipient of several Educational Research Awards from the Society of Forensic Toxicologists (SOFT). He was also the recipient of both the Irving Sunshine Award and Alexander O. Gettler Award from the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) for his research on cocaine.

He is a Diplomate and current Secretary of the American Board of Forensic Toxicology. In addition to being Treasurer of TIAFT, he is a member and Past President of SOFT and a Fellow of the AAFS, where he has also served on its Board of Directors.

Dr. Isenschmid has published and presented on many topics related to postmortem forensic drug testing including medical examiner case reports, the interpretation of postmortem cocaine concentrations, the stability and analysis of cocaine and its metabolites, and the effects of cocaine on human performance. He has lectured extensively to graduate and undergraduate students, pathologists, law enforcement personnel and attorneys. He regularly gives lectures on the forensic toxicology of cocaine including the Borkenstein course on the Effects of Drugs on Human Performance and Behavior at Indiana University in Bloomington.
