NEW YORK--()--His daughter and son-in-law called him a hoarder and were constantly pestering him to throw away his “junk,” but an 85-year-old Atlantic City man knew that what other people considered to be junk was his treasure. Collecting since he was a young teen, the World War II vet kept all of his beloved superhero comic books.
“These are high-grade books with bright colors, tight spines, sharp edges and great eye appeal.”
When his family contacted Metropolis Collectibles, the world’s largest vintage comic dealer, to inspect the old comic book collection, they were stunned to hear that the collection is worth at least $1 million. But the old man wasn’t surprised. When he heard the news, he just folded his arms, smiled and said, “I told you so.”
Now, those 300 comic books are currently being auctioned at Metropolis’ online auction division, www.comicconnect.com. The collection features many rare and sought after Superman, Batman and other Action Comics from the Golden Age. Included is a pristine copy of Captain America 1 which is expected to bring $250,000. The auction ends on August 8th.
“This collection is in great condition,” said Stephen Fishler, co-owner and chief executive officer of Metropolis Collectibles and ComicConnect.com. “These are high-grade books with bright colors, tight spines, sharp edges and great eye appeal.”
Metropolis Collectibles has brokered record-breaking comic book sales, including an unprecedented $1.5 million sale of an Action Comics #1, the legendary comic book that introduced Superman to the world.
