RI Center for Freedom & Prosperity Joins National Effort to Celebrate Freedom

Student Essay Contest Launched in Honor of Noble Laureate Milton Friedman

PROVIDENCE, R.I.--()--The RI Center for Freedom and Prosperity (RI Center for Freedom) launches its initial outreach program in of honor Dr. Milton Friedman today as part of a national day of recognition for the Nobel Laureate, his work, theories, and contributions. The Friedman Legacy for Freedom Day is being celebrated in every U.S. state and in multiple countries.

A student essay contest is being co-sponsored by the RI Center for Freedom and the Foundation for Educational Choice, the continuation of the Milton and Rose D. Friedman Foundation. The essay challenges high school students to explore how Dr. Friedman’s free-market theories are indispensable to their own personal well being and prosperity, and how we can enhance personal freedoms amidst current economic uncertainty.

“It is important for all Americans and Rhode Island citizens, especially our youth, to re-discover an appreciation for the principles that founded our great country and made America the most prosperous nation in history”, said Mike Stenhouse, CEO of the RI Center for Freedom.

The essay contest recognizes the 99th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Friedman, who passed away in November 2006, one of the world’s most influential promoters of economic freedom. He argued that the voluntary choices of individuals, not the dictates of government, should be the default mode of human life. His revolutionary work in economic theory earned him the Nobel Prize in 1976.

“We’re delighted to have the Center for Freedom join us in celebrating Dr. Milton Friedman’s legacy for freedom”, said Robert Enlow, president and CEO of the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice. “With the American economy in crisis and the constant threat of increased government control, Dr. Friedman’s simple, profound belief that humans ought to be free carries fresh, urgent relevance.”

Entries for the contest can be submitted from July 29 through November 15, 2011. For more information, interested students should visit the RI Center for Freedom website at www.rifreedom.org or its Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/RI-Center-for-Freedom-and-Prosperity/238952242804777
